Although World of Warcraft basically has a monopoly on the MMORPG genre they have recently taken a hit in the number of subscribers they have. However, they have come up with a new tool which they hope will boost their subscriptions once again. Blizzard Entertainment is releasing a special code to all their players, which allows a friend to download the game for free.
Starting last week, players noticed they received the code in their email inboxes. The code allows the recipient to download the classic version of World of Warcraft. It does not contain any of the three expansion packs that are currently available. This move makes sense as a new player wouldn’t have much usage for them anyway.
Along with the game itself, recipients are treated to 30 days of free play. Reportedly the free play contains no level caps as some of their trial versions do. When the 30 days are finished however players will have to buy a World of Warcraft account just like everyone else if they want to continue with the video game.
In a very cool move, Blizzard will save any characters you create during your free 30 days even if you don’t subscribe immediately, just in case you change your mind at a later date.
Some thought the emails were a virus at first, as they believed the offer too good to be true. However, they are real and Blizzard released the following statement regarding the offers. “The veteran award email and offer are legitimate and are being sent out to veterans who have previously opted in to receiving news and special offers from Blizzard Entertainment. We may run more of these types of promotions in the future, so if this is something you are interested in, we suggest opting in as soon as possible so you don’t miss out.”
